Tom Stewart Remembered

Tom Stewart

As Alaska approaches its 50th year of statehood, there are few left who were part of the convention that wrote the constitutional framework of our state.

Over the weekend in Juneau, three of the last living delegates and staff to the 1955-56 constitutional convention retold stories of the man who organized the constitutional convention, then served as its secretary.

Tom Stewart died in December at the age of 88. More than 15-hundred people gathered at Saturday’s celebration of his life at Centennial Hall in Juneau.

Stewart also was a member of the Tenth Mountain Division and a decorated World War II veteran, he served in both the territorial and state legislatures, he was a lawyer and superior court judge, a father and mentor. He loved the arts, mountaineering and skiing – and especially Alaska.

He was remembered by convention delegates, supreme court justices, legislators, family members, and musicians.

Rosemarie Alexander brings us this audio postcard from the celebration of Tom Stewart’s life.
