Haiti: Where Did The Money Go?

- Tuesday at 9:00 - In a disaster the size of Haiti’s January 2010 earthquake, it might seem like only the big NGOs and government agencies could handle it. With millions of Haitians left without some of the most basic necessities, the smaller players were doing some of the best work.

Filmmaker Michele Mitchell speaks to members of small NGOs and independent businessmen who were on the ground helping Haitians protect themselves against Hurricane Tomas and the cholera outbreak.

Tununeremiut

- Wednesday at 8:00 - This documentary includes four sequences, filmed over a two-month period in 1972, that portray aspects of the lives of the people of Tununak, a village on the south-western coast of Alaska.

In the first, the villagers evacuate their homes and camp on higher ground, fearing that a Nuclear test on Amchitka Island, 1000 miles away, may cause a tidal wave. In a quietly ironic scene, the Eskimos listen to the countdown on their radios, wondering if this modern blast will bring forth an ancient disaster.

In the second vignette, a group of men travel by snowmobile to place fishtraps under the river ice. They become lost in heavy fog, blinded by the glare of the ice, and confused by the complicated turns of the rivers in a landscape where the only landmarks are short, low-lying bushes or old fishtraps. In spite of the difficulty of seeing, they discus their quandary calmly and eventually find their way.

A sudden storm from the Bering sea hits Tununak with gale force winds and heavy snow. Laundry blows wildly in the wind as people prepare for the storm.

The concluding sequence captures communal warmth as people gather in the meeting hall for traditional story-dancing. All participate: men beating drums, and singing, women dancing, adorned with beaded headbands and feathery finger masks. The dancing in Tununak still provides an important outlet for individual expression, at the same time communicating the village’s unwritten history.

Gavel Alaska Goes Mobile

Gavel Alaska has launched a new mobile website for the start of the 2012 Legislative session. Viewers with mobile devices like iPhones and Androids can view the site at www.gavelalaska.org/mobile. The mobile site allows viewers to watch live coverage, check the daily schedule of televised and web events, and access the archives for events from prior legislative sessions. The site is compatible with most smart phones and other mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Androids.

The new mobile site, along with the main website at www.gavelalaska.org, provides a way for viewers to access Gavel Alaska from anywhere in the world.

Our schedule changed on Tuesday, January 17. Gavel Alaska coverage of the second legislative session of the 27th Alaska legislature airs from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. We resume at 10 p.m. each evening.
